Opening a Corporate Bank Account in the UAE: Why It Takes Longer Than the Licence

Company formation in a UAE free zone can be completed in a matter of days. Opening the corporate bank account routinely takes four to twelve weeks. The gap surprises almost every first-time entrant.

Why banks are slow

Following the UAE's period under enhanced FATF monitoring, which ended with its removal from the grey list in February 2024, banks tightened onboarding. KYC now scrutinises ultimate beneficial ownership, source of funds, the economic rationale of the structure and the plausibility of projected flows.

What actually gets accepted

A clear business plan with named counterparties, signed contracts or LOIs, audited accounts of the parent company, a resident manager with a valid Emirates ID, and a physical office rather than the cheapest flexi-desk. Vague 'general trading' activity is the most common cause of rejection.

Sequencing

Start the bank file in parallel with the licence, not after it. Expect at least one compliance interview, and plan working capital assuming the account is not operational in month one.

How we support this

We prepare the documentation pack to the standard the compliance committee expects and coordinate the process — we do not promise outcomes, because no consultant controls a bank's credit and compliance decision.
